GUNPLA MGEX - Master Grade EXTREME
Master Grade Extreme is Bandai saying "what if we took Master Grade and removed all the limits?" Officially announced in June 2020 after Bandai registered the MGEX trademark, the sub-line launched as part of the Gunpla 40th Anniversary celebration with a clear mission: create a new luxury tier within the MG range where every release is engineered around a unique, never before seen gimmick. Bandai calls these gimmicks "Extreme Points." The concept is specific and deliberate. Each MGEX kit identifies the single most iconic feature of the mobile suit it represents and then amplifies that feature to an absolute maximum using technology and techniques that have never been attempted in a model kit before.
No two MGEX kits share the same Extreme Point. Every release is its own standalone engineering showcase. The first MGEX kit, released in September 2020, was the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka. Its Extreme Point is an integrated flexible LED light strip that runs through the entire body of the mobile suit. The strip winds through the limbs, torso and head, following the path of the psycho frame, and it lights up from within. The LED unit changes color, shifting between green for Unicorn Mode and red for Destroy Mode, replicating the transformation gimmick from the anime with real light. You build the LED strip into the frame as you assemble the kit, making the lighting system a structural part of the skeleton rather than an afterthought or bolt-on accessory.
When finished and switched on, the kit glows from within in a way that no other Gunpla at any grade had ever achieved before. It was a genuine first for the hobby. The second MGEX release, the ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam, went in a completely different direction, proving that MGEX is not just "the LED line." Instead of lighting, its Extreme Point is a fully gold metallic coated and plated inner frame. The entire skeleton of the kit has a premium, almost jewelry-like quality, with a multi-toned gold finish that catches light from every angle.
It also features the highest level of joint part interactivity ever achieved in a Master Grade, with the DRAGOON wing system, weapons and limbs all connecting and moving with exceptional precision and range. The frame itself is designed to be displayed exposed, because the gold finish is part of the appeal. Both MGEX kits carry the Ver.Ka label, meaning Hajime Katoki's sharp design philosophy is built into the DNA of every release.
That means you get the refined proportions, dense mechanical detail and premium waterslide decal sheets that Ver.Ka is known for, layered on top of the extreme engineering gimmick. It is the combination of Katoki's design excellence and Bandai's most ambitious technology in a single box. MGEX kits are not cheap and they are not quick to build. The part count is high, the construction is complex and the assembly demands patience and care, especially when working with LED strips or handling metallic plated runners. But the payoff is a finished model that does not look or feel like anything else in your collection. They are statement pieces for builders who have already experienced what standard MG and Ver.Ka can offer and want something that will genuinely surprise them. If you have built gunpla mg kits before and you are ready to step into the most advanced, most ambitious territory that Bandai offers at 1/100 scale, MGEX is where you go next.
