Tamiya X-20A is the dedicated acrylic thinner designed specifically for use with Tamiya X and XF series acrylic paints. It's the white cap bottle, and if you're using Tamiya acrylics regularly, this is one of those products you'll always want to have on hand.
The main job of X-20A is thinning your paints for airbrushing. A good starting point is a 1:1 ratio of paint to thinner, and you can adjust from there depending on how the paint flows and the coverage you're after. It helps the paint reach the right consistency to spray smoothly without fading, spotting, or clogging your airbrush. It also works well for cleaning brushes and rinsing out your airbrush between color changes.
One thing worth knowing is how X-20A behaves compared to Tamiya Lacquer Thinner. X-20A is the milder option. It's less aggressive on previous coats, meaning there's less risk of reactivating or lifting paint you've already laid down. It also tends to give XF flat colors a softer matte finish, while lacquer thinner pushes the finish slightly harder and glossier. Both are valid choices, it just depends on what result you're going for. That said, never mix X-20A with lacquer thinner, they are not compatible with each other.
And just to be clear on one common point of confusion: X-20A (white cap) is for Tamiya acrylics only. It is not the same as X-20 (blue cap), which is Tamiya Enamel Thinner and is meant for a completely different paint line. Mixing them up will cause problems, so always check the cap color before pouring.
