Backstory

The RMS-154 Barzam is a mass production mobile suit from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, designed by mechanical designer Hideo Okamoto. Developed by the Titans at the New Guinea Base as a replacement for the aging RMS-179 GM II, the Barzam was loosely based on the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II. Because former Zeon engineers participated in its development, the final design ended up incorporating a Zeon style mono-eye and other Zeonic traits, making it look nothing like its Federation ancestry. Despite being considered "too ordinary" due to its lack of unique weaponry, the Barzam was produced in large numbers and deployed both on Earth and in space during the Gryps War.

The Kit

For years, the Barzam was one of those mobile suits fans kept asking Bandai to make, and in May 2017, it finally happened. This kit was actually a pretty big deal when it came out. Its simple, modular design and unconventional engineering reportedly influenced Bandai's approach to future grunt suit kits and even contributed to the creation of the 30 Minutes franchise. Compared to older 1/144 Barzam resin kits from the B-Club line, this release is on a completely different level in terms of accessibility and detail. The color separation is handled almost entirely through multi-color injection molding, with dark gray, red, blue, yellow, and black plastic all working together to minimize sticker reliance.

Features

Articulation is one of this kit's strongest points. The ball joint gimmicks in the shoulders allow forward, backward, and vertical movement, while the unconventional torso design (where the waist and backpack are integrated, with the legs connecting directly underneath) gives it a unique range of motion you don't see in most High Grade kits. The mono-eye is a clear pink part rather than a sticker, which is always a welcome touch. It comes with its signature beam rifle, two beam sabers stored in the forearms with effect parts, and the optional VCU-505EX-Gry 60mm Vulcan pod system that mounts on the head. Hand options include open and closed fist pairs. Foil stickers are included for smaller markings, but overall, paint requirements are minimal.
